Described by The Times Magazine as ‘the Ian Dury for the 21st Century‘, punk-poet and pioneer of the spoken word – Ian Wills has teamed up with godmother of Irish music – Moya Brennan (Clannad), to produce a work of rare beauty both methodically and lyrically.
The track ‘Mercy’s Door‘, a follow up to 2017’s album release of ‘Dream in Colour‘ (released 30th November), has already been described as the song to knock The Pogues‘ ‘Fairy Tale of New York‘ off of their mantle as an iconic Christmas classic, and, while not strictly a seasonal record, Ian’s profound and timeless lyrics with the legendary Moya’s ethereal, bewitching vocals deliver a magical song for any time of year and seems destined to strike a chord in the hearts of millions.
With a confrontational and often stark use of language, Ian had already been elevated to the position of one of Britain’s premiere spoken work artists. With Wills and the Willing, his work has garnered high praise since 2005 with Janice Long championing the band on Radio 2, giving highly acclaimed single ‘21st Century Love Song‘ plenty of airplay. Moreover, being given the chance to share a radio show with the legendary Les Paulwas a personal highlight, with it being said live on air that his lyrics were among his favourite in recent times.
Since their debut release was declared ‘Pick of the Fringe’ at the Edinburgh Fringe, slots playing at Guilfest and Isle of Wight music festivals, the Royal Albert Hall, and live sessions of BBC Radio have ensured that Ian Wills continues to be on of the country’s most challenging and important artists.
